The Home on the Range site is 240 acres in Pleasant Township, Smith County, Kansas consisting of range and cultivated land; within this site is 13 acres devoted exclusively for use by the Higley/Home on the Range Cabin and associated events. The entire site is privately owned by the Peoples Heartland Foundation who received it as a gift from the Trustees of the Ellen Rust Living Trust.

The Peoples Heartland Foundation is a 501c3 charity operating and managing the Home on the Range Site as a sub-foundation. Those family members or their heirs who were former beneficiaries of the Ellen Rust Trust will continue to serve in an advisory capacity to the Peoples Foundation.

Donations to date have provided for restoration of the Cabin, Cabin furnishings, nature walk foot bridges and a commemorative flagpole. These projects are possible only by the donations of individuals, companies and other charities. Funds have also been raised to pay for two Kansas Department of Transportation signs naming the 16 mile stretch of highway where the Home on the Range Cabin is located as “The Home on the Range Highway”.

Additional funds are being raised┬áto support a historical documentary by Lone Chimney Films to tell the story of Brewster Higley’s “Home on the Range” song and cabin. Lone Chimney Films,a 501c3 not-for-profit education and arts company based in Andover, KS, will premier the Home on the Range documentary after the first of the year in Smith Center, Wichita and Kansas City.

Ongoing support is greatly appreciated and needed for continued work to complete the nature walk, including low-water creek crossings, information stations, landscaping, as well as ongoing maintenance and additional site projects.
