HOME ON THE RANGE
By El Dean Holthus

Saturday, June 28, 2014 Kathy and I were delighted to attend the installation of Dr. Roger Marshall of Great Bend, as the District Governor of Rotary District #5670. Dr. Marshall will serve for the 2014-15 year. The event was held in the beautiful Eisenhower Memorial Library, Abilene, KS adjacent to the museum honoring this great American military hero and President.

El Dean and Kathy represented the Ellen Rust Living Trust at the invitation of Dr. Marshall to attend and set up a display. Previously I have written of Dr. Marshall’s leadership, at the District level of Rotary, to complete the foot bridges. He confirmed that on Sunday, October 5, 2014, after the re-dedication of the Home on the Range Cabin, he is planning a program of recognition and dedication of the foot bridges. We will also at that time dedicate bridge #2 to the late Dr. Bill Grimes past District Governor who was from Smith Center. Bridge #1 is the “Rotary Bridge” because it was fully funded and built by the Smith Center Club under the leadership of President Clark Lambert.

When Rotarians, seeing Smith Center on our name tags, commented on knowing Hi Faubian, Bill Grimes and Keith Hooper; a great sense of pride in our community welled up inside us as these names were mentioned. We need to be proud of our town and what we have to offer.

We will be continuing efforts to clean up the damage from the wind storm of a few weeks ago and improvement of the bridge approaches.

Come visit the Cabin on July 4, 2014 for an informal open house from 2-5 to view the Cabin furnishings crafted by Gerald Caspers and the new flag pole and flags donated by the Sarah Steward Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. This will be the 142nd anniversary of original construction; there may be refreshments.

Visits are scheduled for the next couple of week-ends from a Hays group and a military family from Fort Riley who will update our geocaching information and its location at the Site.

Please take time to remember Doris Sinden, Smith Center with a birthday card before July 7. Doris spent much of her childhood on a farm just south of the HOR site, was a dear and special friend of Ellen Rust and continues to be a good friend and financial supporter of the Site. Doris was the FIRST local resident to make a cash donation to the Cabin Restoration Fund. Happy Birthday Doris.
